For more than two decades I've been building strategies for profiting from horse racing and football.

I had to sheepishly admit that I knew less than nothing about dog racing and they were just as likely to pick a winner as me.

But then the friend who's birthday it was piped up...

"Oh don't worry about that. My uncle owns a couple of dogs, we'll ask him."

We proceeded to find him and have some small talk introducing ourselves etc.

Just as he had to rush off (he had several dogs running that night) my birthday friend quickly asked him for tips.

He instantly reeled off three greyhounds to bet on that night. One of them being his.

There was no nudge nudge wink wink.

He just casually said, "You want to be on these ones tonight lads."

I didn't really think much of it. Of course, we all bet the dogs he suggested. We had no clue what to bet on afterall.

In the first race the dog won by a length at 3/1. Not huge odds obviously but it was still only the 2nd favourite.

In the next race the dog won by miles and was a 13/8F.

And then in the final race our selection led the whole way and won easily at 9/4. Again it was the second favourite.

The other races were a mixed bag (as we were choosing our own bets) and if I remember correctly I think I broke even overall.

But I was still amazed how the three selections he gave us all won relatively easily.

Now, I know they weren't long shots by any means. But the confidence he had that these dogs were going to win still surprised me.

As we were leaving we saw him again and of course I couldn't resist asking him about the selections.

He was very nonchalant and just said, and I'm paraphrasing here...

"When you're in the know you hear things and you know which dogs are primed to win that evening."

Again there was no nudge nudge wink wink.

And that was that. (I've never met the man again).

We carried on the birthday celebrations that night but in my brain I new I had to look into this greyhound betting thing.

And I started the very next day.

I didn't really know what I was looking for but I knew there had to be a strategy I could come up with.

I only had about an hour a day to research so it was slow going.

I won't bore you with the process, but as I always do, I read books and read forums where people were talking about greyhound betting.

Nothing was really coming together.

I was getting too bogged down in form reading principles which is not my favourite thing to do.

And then I realised something.

Why was I form reading when I should have been looking for, for the want of a better word, gambles.

Obviously not the huge horse racing type gambles like the Barney Curley one.

I was looking for small gambles where the people in the know, know something is going down.

They know when a dog is primed to win. And it's information that is almost impossible for the regular punter to find out.

But there had to be a way of spotting these gambles.

So I scrapped everything I was doing and went in the opposite direction.

No form reading whatsoever.

Again, I won't bore you with the whole process.

But the decision to scrap form reading led me to a eureka moment and I studied something else instead.

And once I did that things became very clear indeed.

I noticed a striking pattern almost straight away.

On my very first day betting I hit two reverse forecasts and four winners out of ten races I bet on.

Was it a fluke? Beginners luck maybe?

Over the next week I found more winners using this one greyhound betting strategy than all my horse racing strategies put together.

Now of course the odds are shorter. I bet at short odds on greyhounds and sometimes I'm betting on rank outsiders on the horses.
